Swim for Stroke

I'm taking part in the Swim for Stroke challenge!

I joined #TeamStroke for Swim for Stroke.

On the 1st August 2023 we unfortunately lost my Uncle John to a stroke. He was an incredible man, and I could spend hours writing about all the good he did, but at the core of it all, he was someone who cared and loved deeply.

He was an amazing brother to my Grandma, and after the loss of her husband (who would have been my Grandad) he stepped in to support my mum, always pushing her to reach her potential. Without him, I wouldn’t have the life I do.

When I remember him, I think of his smile and his kind eyes. They are eyes I will never forget, and if I can live my life with even a fraction of the love he had in them, I’ll have lived a very full life indeed.  Losing him has left a noticeable gap in the lives of everyone who knew him, but he will be remembered in the stories everyone who knew him must have. He will not be forgotten.

I’m taking part in the Swim for Stroke challenge in his memory. He was never afraid of new advancements to technology, he embraced them as a part of the future, and I hope that I can make him proud by fundraising in his name to help researchers stop other families having to live with this loss.

Stroke Association is here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

My updates

Goodbye, Uncle John.

Monday 21st Aug
Today we said goodbye to my Uncle John, and it was a beautiful service put together by those who knew him best. One of the things most talked about throughout the day was his love of new technology and research- he worked as a technician in the chemistry department at the University of Cardiff, and in his retirement fitted new speakers to his church. He was never afraid of technological advancement, he embraced it as a part of life, and tried his best to help its progress. So to me, it felt fitting to fundraise in his name to a charity which funds research into new technologies to help people who’ve survived a Stroke, and help to prevent them.

His body isn’t with us anymore, but that doesn’t mean that what he believed in and stood for can’t live on. He was an exceptional man and he inspired many people, and hopefully by fundraising in his name, he can continue to do good, as he always did in life.

Which is why this evening I decided to commit to the #SwimforStroke challenge. I’m aiming to swim 20.5 miles by the end of the year (those of you who know me well know that isn’t something I would no normally!!) I’ll keep updating this page with my progress, and I am so grateful for anything you can give.

To Uncle John,
Thank you, for all the good you did. Thank you for pushing my mum to believe in herself. Thank you for supporting my grandma, your sister, throughout her life. Thank you for always having time for me and my sister, and giving us so many fond memories of your smile, and your laugh. Thank you for being a constant throughout my life, you will be missed greatly.
I hope that you can rest, and be reunited with those you lost yourself over the years. I’m not sure what I believe when it comes to things like that, but I like to think that whatever comes next, it is peaceful and lovely.  Everyone here will support each other, that’s something I’m sure of.
Goodbye, Sleep Well.
