Swim for Stroke is a great way for you to get swimming, keep active and raise vital funds to support stroke survivors across the UK. Whether you’ve just learned to swim or you’re ready to achieve a new personal best, this is the challenge for you.

Register today to receive your digital pack to guide you through planning and tracking your challenge, as well as give you tips on how to make a splash with your fundraising. Don’t forget, we’re always on hand to support you – so let’s jump in!

Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. That is over 100,000 strokes a year. Depending on which part of the brain is affected, you may suddenly face communication and physical difficulties, or you may find that your emotions and personality are affected. The impact of a stroke can be completely life-altering, but so can the impact of your help.

How far will you swim?

When deciding your distance, it’s important to consider your current fitness level and any health conditions. If you’re in any doubt, please contact your local GP.

We have 4 suggested distances for you:

  • 1.3 miles: the width of Loch Ness - 84 laps of an average 25m swimming pool.
  • 7 miles: the length of Ullswater (it’s a beautiful spot) - 450 laps of an average 25m swimming pool.
  • 13 miles: North Channel - 836 laps of an average 25m swimming pool.
  • 20.5 miles: English Channel - 1320 laps of an average 25m swimming pool.

Is there a fundraising target?

add remove
There is no minimum fundraising target for Swim for Stroke, but to get your free swimming mementos you’ll need to fundraise: £50 for swimming cap, £125 for your Swim for Stroke medal and £350 for towel.

Every pound you do raise will go towards rebuilding lives after stroke so try your best and get fundraising. Need some target setting ideas? In your digital welcome pack we’ve got a list of what your fundraising can do so make sure to check it out.

Do you have swimming costumes?

add remove

I’m afraid we don’t do swimming costumes here at Stroke Association, but have a look around to find the best costume for you. If you raise £50.00 (or more!) we’ll send you your very own Stroke Association swimming cap to complete your kit.

What if I can't swim the whole distance?

The great thing about this challenge is that it is totally flexible so you can don’t have to do all your miles on set days. You can spread it out over as many days as you like. If you are unable to complete your Swim for Stroke challenge, why not ask a friend or family member to continue it on and finish the miles you weren’t able to take?

Does everyone have to start together/when does it start?

add remove
There is no set start dates for Swim for Stroke. Please start in your own time, and take it at your own pace – it’s not a race!

When does Swim for Stroke finish?

add remove
One of the great things about Swim for Stroke is it gives you the flexibility to swim your chosen distance at a time and place that suits you. We do recommend you set yourself the goal of completing your miles within a month of starting so that your “eyes stay on the prize”, but if you need longer then the flexibility is yours – it’s not a race!
