Oysho Royal Parks Half Marathon 2026

I'm taking part in the Royal Parks Half Marathon 2026 as part of #TeamStroke

I joined #TeamStroke for the Royal Parks Half Marathon 2026.

There are over 1.4 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

We're here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

Why am I doing this

Saturday 10th Oct
Lots of people want to raise money, particularly when members of their family, friends, or someone close to them is afflicted by a disease or a condition which can alter their life, and that's no different to my particular situation.

In December of last year, my mother sustained a second hemorrhagic stroke following one that she had six months earlier. The first one she managed to bounce back from and made a pretty remarkable recovery. The second, however, has left her bedridden,  in a care home, unable to feed herself and unable to speak clearly or move independently.  It's a salutary reminder that at any time in our lives, something can happen which can change our trajectory.

In February of this year, my youngest daughter Jasmine decided that we should do something positive and try and raise some money for the Stroke Association, and entered the entire family for a half marathon!  This seemed like a fantastic idea at the time, but as time has drawn on, I have realised, at my not-so-young age, that various injuries have prevented me from training for this event. It is now imminent, and upon me. To be totally honest, I'm not hugely looking forward to it, but despite my own personal inadequacies of feeling fit enough to do it, I remember my mother, who cannot move and is a prisoner inside her body.

For that reason, rather than wanting to run for a specific time, I am  just grateful that I have the body, the physicality, to be able to do something like this. I'd be massively grateful if you can donate for this cause. It'd mean a lot to me, my mother, and, more importantly, the Stroke Association. Even if it's £5, it doesn't matter. Anything you can offer will be of great benefit.

Thank you so much for reading this.
