Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2025

I'm taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon 2025 as part of #TeamStroke

Completing a marathon has always been on my bucket list, so I set myself the challenge of running 26(.2) miles before I turn 26 in 2026. Not only did I want to challenge myself and my abilities, but I also wanted to take this opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause.

The Stroke Association was absolutely a no brainer when choosing a charity to run and raise money for. In February 2020, our family received news that completely turned our lives upside down. My wonderful Nan had sadly suffered a huge stroke that nearly took her away from us.

In true Marilyn style, my Nan fought against all the odds then, and continues to do so every day since. We are so unbelievably lucky to still have her with us, but there is no hiding from the fact that the stroke has completely changed her life.

She has shown nothing but strength and determination every day over the past 5 years, and has overcome so many obstacles that have been thrown at her. She makes me, and my family, so proud every single day.

However, I would be lying if I said that it has been easy for us as a family. Despite being lucky enough to still have our wonderful Nan with us, there is no denying that the stroke changed her as a person. She requires full-time care, is unable to walk, and has lost her independence completely. The stroke has taken everything from her, as well as her devoted husband Mo, and all of us as a family.

It is completely unfair, and it makes me angry even 5 years on. My Nan was the most active and health-conscious 72 year old I had ever met, and that was taken away from her in an instant through no fault of her own.

Strokes do not care about age, lifestyle, gender, or ethnicity. Strokes are cruel and can happen to anyone, at any age, at any time. You truly never know what is round the corner, life is so precious and can be taken away in an instance.

If I could switch places with my Nan and take away all her pain, I would do it in an instant. I would never wish a stroke upon my worst enemy, it is truly a devastating situation to experience whether it be you, or someone you love.

The Stroke Association do an absolutely fantastic job at supporting people rebuild their lives after a stroke. They provide crucial support, fund critical research, and make sure individuals affected by strokes get the very best care and support to rebuild their lives.

One day, I hope that research can improve treatments and rehabilitation so that lives can be saved and improved, and ultimately reduce the devastating impact strokes have on people all across the world.

I appreciate times have been tough financially recerently, but if anyone could spare a few pennies to sponsor me for the Edinburgh Marathon 2025, then I would be eternally grateful.

Nan, this is for you. I love you more than life itself, and your strength inspires me every day. I hope one day I am even half the woman you are, thank you for being the best Nan we could ever ask for. I hope I make you proud.

Suppose I should start training now…

Thank you!
