I'm running my first ever marathon as part of #TeamStroke
On Sunday 29 March 1981, the first ever London Marathon took place. Only elite runners were invited to take part and my Uncle Phillip, at the age of 27, was one of them! As a small child, I remember seeing a photo in my Nan's bedroom of Uncle Phillip running in this Marathon and I thought "wow, I want to do that", not knowing at all just how blimin far it was!
On 28 August 1993 at the age of 39, Uncle Phillip suffered a huge stroke. Even though I was young, I remember rushing to the hospital and how worried everyone was. He survived and has become an incredibly talented woods craftsman. My Aunt and Uncle attend a local support group run by The Stroke Association, who also provided family with support and information at the time of Phillip's stroke. Because of this support, I always then said "when I run the London Marathon, I WILL do it for Stroke Association".
When this would be, I didn't know, I kept putting it off scared of the training and time commitment, I'm under no illusions that this is going to be extremely hard, even though I am already a keen runner! 26.2 miles is FAR.
But on Sunday 21 April 2024, I will be 39. The same age Uncle Phillip was when he had his stroke. And this is YOUNG. I can't imagine something like that happening to me, what would happen to my girls? So there you go, the ultimate goal! Any support really would be so much appreciated.
