London Marathon 2024 #TeamStroke
On 4th January 2023, I suffered from a stroke. It was an intracerebral haemorrhage causing blood to leak from a blood vessel into the brain tissue, which ended up affecting the visual part of my brain. This type of stroke is pretty rare and accounts for <15% of strokes (I like to keep things interesting!).
Since then, it's been a slow road to recovery but thanks to my amazing family and friends, the Stroke Association, and the NHS, I'm pretty much back to full strength. I'm lucky that the only lasting impact is to my eyes (some limited movement and a bit of double vision).
I'm absolutely delighted to be running the London Marathon for Stroke Association in April 2024. My main three reasons for running are:
1) To show my appreciation for the unbelievable NHS and Stroke Association nurses who cared for me whilst I (and Alice, my wife) spent the week in hospital.
2) A lot of stroke victims aren't as lucky as me and are left with serious disabilities. Raising money for the Stroke Association will help it to provide more care for and to rebuild the lives of those people.
3) Selfishly, having never run a marathon before, I want to prove to myself that I'm able to achieve as much and more than I was able to pre-stroke.
