I'm taking part in the TCS London Marathon as part of #TeamStroke
Stroke changes everything but so can your support
Life is often an unexpected journey.
Just over a year ago I sat at my dear Dads bedside in his Care Home with my brother Tim and his wife Helen. Dad’s relief from his battle with Vascular dementia was coming to an end and we spent the night together remembering the happy times over many years. As dawn broke on New Years Day 2023 Dad was finally at peace. The usual arrangements followed and we laid him to rest with our dear Mum in early February supporting each other as families do.
A week to the day following Dad’s funeral, the most unexpected event happened, Helen suffered a catastrophic stroke in her sleep and died 3 days later. She was fit, healthy and only 55. The impact this has had on the family particularly my brother Tim and his 3 children is difficult to describe but as you can imagine our family unit was shaken to the core at a time when we were already so fragile and vulnerable.
In so many ways I feel completely helpless. I can give hugs to my brother and his family but nothing will ever fill the huge gap that Helen has left.
I want to support the Stroke Association to help prevent other families suffering this sort of loss and the crippling ongoing impact so I am running the London Marathon to raise much needed money to fund more research projects into the prevention of Stroke and support survivors.
If you were able to help me by donating to the Stroke Association I would be most grateful. Just a small donation could help research to prevent others having to suffer and help me give those one in five families that are affected by stroke the hugs they need.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Together we can make a difference and I will be running the London Marathon with our dear Helen in mind for every step of the 26.2 miles.

I think of Helen often - she and Tim were so kind to me when I moved to Sutton Coldfield in the mid nineties! I was so pleased to find her on Facebook and connect with her again. Devastating loss!

Enjoy the event, I know it will have meant a lot of preparation, but take encouragement from knowing so many will be with you in spirit, and be inspired by your desire to make a difference for people like Helen.
