Second Chances: Why I'm Lacing Up Again

Tuesday 14th Jul
A couple of weeks before the half marathon, I dropped out. An injury picked up in training took the decision out of my hands.
I had done all the training. Every run, every early morning, every mile logged — and then it was gone, taken by one injury I couldn't train through. Words genuinely can't describe how disappointing that was. It felt like watching months of work slip through my fingers right before the finish line I never even got to see.
But I'm back. And this year, I'm doing it.
This time, I'm running for Team Stroke. A close family member passed away from a stroke, and this run is my way of honoring his memory — and paying it forward for others facing the same fight.
Here's the part that makes this truly a challenge: I'm a powerlifter, not a runner. My world is measured in seconds, not miles — nothing I do normally takes longer than 10 seconds flat out. A two-hour effort is completely foreign territory for me. This isn't just a comeback race. It's a completely different kind of strength I'm having to build from scratch.
But that's exactly why it matters. Some things are worth doing even when they're outside your comfort zone — especially when you're doing them for someone else.
This year, I finish what I started.
