I'm taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon - This is why.

Friday 11th Jul
Some are already aware that in 2023, my Mum suffered a series of strokes that resulted in damage to multiple locations within her brain. Where she now lives with cognitive impairments, speech and language difficulties, weakness within the right side of her body and early onset dementia as a result of this. 

Watching her go from someone always on the move and having her as our support system, to now having that role completely reversed, has been a difficult journey for us all to navigate to say the least. The countless support and hard work provided by all the medical staff, rehabilitation team and organisations like the Stroke Association, as well as many others over the years, most certainly does not go unnoticed. I don’t even know where to begin on thanking them all. 

That said, in an attempt to show an ounce of my appreciation and support, from now until October, I will be training and working my way towards the Cardiff Half Marathon. I will be racing as part of Team Stroke and for my Mum. 

There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

The Stroke Association are here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. They believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so they work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. They rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.
