I joined #TeamStroke for the Great North Run 2024 in memory of my amazing, loving, hilarious Pop, Brian McLellan 🌹

Stroke is a great charity that supports people in rebuilding their lives after stroke,  providing them and their families with the very best care and support.

The money I raise will help to fund vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

My updates

This time next week

Sunday 1st Sep
Just 1 week to go before the big day and I'm REALLY excited. I feel like I haven't run as much as I'd have liked to in August because of the heat but I'm hoping the 788km (!!) I've run over the year will count for something. My running partner, Diane, pointed out that's like running to Paris!!

Thank you so much to everyone who has sponsored me... I'm way over my initial target at nearly £500 for Stroke Association.

If you haven't sponsored yet and would like to, there's still plenty of time!

Less than 4 weeks to go!

Saturday 10th Aug
This time in 4 weeks, my very good friend Diane and I will be tucked up in our hotel, ready to take on the GNR on Sunday morning!

This week, Teds and I headed up in the mountains to escape the August heat and I clocked up 50km without too much difficulty. There were great routes up through the hills, in the forest with amazing views from the top... I'm feeling strong and READY!

BRING IT ON!!

Look what just arrived 😍

Friday 26th Jul

It's HOT

Sunday 21st Jul
July is here and although training should be at its pinnacle, the temperatures are through the roof and it's tricky to get the kms in! I'm pretty sure that running 10km in 34° heat is the same as running 20km in 17° heat, right??

Survivor

Sunday 30th Jun
It's taken a good few days for me to recover but I successfully completed my first trail event in Font Romeu last Sunday. It was tough going, up and down a black ski slope ... and then some!
Fortunately now it's plain sailing through to Newcastle!! Bring on the Great North Run!

May

Friday 17th May
The trail training is going well. I'm feeling fit and strong, averaging between 35 and 40km a week.
I tested my first proper trail at the weekend, 12km loop up and then back down the Tour de la Massane. It was steep and hot but I did it.
Lessons learnt:
- walking and taking breaks on the uphill is normal
-downhill is harder on the abs than the legs
-take snacks!!!

Panic

Wednesday 17th Apr
Last month we decided to register for a 15km event in June as a "warm up" for the GNR in September. Although I knew Font Romeu was in the mountains, I figured I'd sail round the 15km, given I'm already clocking 30-40km a week with a 20km run included in there. How wrong I was! We went up to Font Romeu at the weekend to walk the course and it turns out I had wildly underestimated it. At one point we were walking up the snow park, I can only hope we got the course directions wrong 😅
Needless to say, as soon as we got back, I found a 9 week trail preparation programme and am religiously sticking to it, come rain, sun or the gale force winds we have currently!

6 months to go

Saturday 9th Mar
Today marks exactly 6 months to go until the big day 😁😬🏃‍♀️ Training is steady, I'm comfortable around the 15km mark... on the flat! To spur ourselves on (and to mark Dad's birthday), we've signed up for a trail event in Font Romeu in June. 15km, fine, but at altitude and with some hefty inclines/descents, eeek! I've bought myself some snazzy new trail running shoes in the hope that this will make a difference, but in my heart of hearts, I know the only way to make it is to add some hill training to my programme... my legs ache just thinking about it!!

1 month in

Tuesday 6th Feb
Turns out 20km a week isn't as easy as I thought it would be, not so much in terms of the actual running but in terms of finding the time!! With a week off for a work event, I just missed my January target by 6km. BUT I also missed the first week of Feb with the family ski trip so very quickly I've ended up with 26km to make up before the end of the month. Even with a leap year, I'd better put the phone down and the trainers on!

Here we go!

Saturday 6th Jan
Happy new year everyone! As well as the Great North Run in September for Dad and the Stoke Association, I'm challenging myself to run 1000km over the course of 2024. That's an average of 20km every week of the year. I'm off to a great start, this first week I've put myself into credit, clocking 28km !

Thank you to my sponsors
