I'm taking part in the Stride for Stroke challenge!

I joined #TeamStroke for Stride for Stroke as a thank you for the part they have played in my recovery, so that they can continue to support other stroke survivors and do much needed research into strokes.

I suffered my stroke on 3 March 2022, a day that will be forever ingrained in my memory. The immediate effects were complete paralysis on my left side. This resulted in 4 weeks in hospital followed by 4 weeks in rehabilitation, before being in a position to continue my recovery at home, the day before my 50th birthday.

The recovery journey has been long and hard, but I am fortunate to have incredible support from my wife, family, close friends, work colleagues, and a wonderful specialist neurological physio, to the point that if you looked at me now, it would be difficult to believe this had happened.

I am now at a point where I feel confident to take this challenge and to give something back.

From 3 March 2024, I will be taking one step for each of the 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK. The 1.3 million steps challenge works out at 10,000 steps a day for 130 days.

Stroke Association is here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

My updates

And it's a wrap

Friday 12th Jul
Wow, 130 days has flown by. Some days have been harder than others, not helped by the great British weather.

However, challenge successfully achieved, with 300,000 additional steps. What is life without a spreadsheet

I've enjoyed doing this challenge as it has pushed me and also had some great days out doing it.

I'm lucky to have had such great support throughout this challenge and my recovery in general.

Massive thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey

121 days done, 9 to go

Tuesday 2nd Jul
It's been a busy month both on and off the step challenge, but I have persevered and have managed to achieve a minimum of 10,000 steps a day.

Highlights include:
-  a business trip to Glasgow, seeing some of my business acquaintances who were with me on the day my stroke happened. Even managed to get the steps in despite being on the train for two days.

- a 25,000 step walk around London with a University housemate who I hadn't seen for 30 years. We just walked and talked, although I mainly listened

- a venture around London the following day from my beautiful wife's 50th birthday. She has been my rock, and my why. See next para

When my stroke first happened, a close friend sent me a book, "Man's search for meaning". It is a very deep book, which had inspired him to overcome the adversity he was facing. I have totally over-simplified this, but if you understand the why, and have a strong purpose, you can deal with the how.

1,475,705 steps done and 9 days to go.

1,000,000 steps done

Monday 27th May
It goes without saying that I would have a spreadsheet to track my steps.

Proud to say that I have completed 1,000,000 - just 300,000 to go, but I will continue for the 130 days, and probably thereafter.

It's doing me the world of good, both physically and mentally, especially with the better weather we are now enjoying

Month 1 complete

Wednesday 3rd Apr
Ngl, not been easy, but challenges never are. Hardest part is finding the time to do it. Well ahead of schedule but will continue to push for over 10,000 steps a day.

Week 3 update

Tuesday 26th Mar
Another successful week, but was hard work.

Week 2 successfully completed

Monday 18th Mar
Feeling under the weather with a heavy cold but persevered in order to meet the daily challenge. It is hard work, but worth it.

Feeling a lot better now and gearing up for week 3.

Week 1 complete

Monday 11th Mar
Week 1 done, and averaging over 14k per day, with at least 10k done each day.

Started off on anniversary by walking around a cold, but sunny London.

Gradually eased off as the week went on; didn't realise how hard it would be, both physically and mentally, let alone finding the time.

2 days into Week 2, and going strong.

Only 121 days to go

Thank you to my sponsors
