What is the Stride for Stroke challenge all about?

We know that there are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK. We want to honour these incredible people for their courage and strength, and with your help we can.

We’re asking supporters take one step for each of the 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK. That works out at 10,000 steps a day for 130 days.

It aims to raise money to help support stroke survivors who face a daily struggle to rebuild their lives and honour those who have lost a loved one to stroke.

I am a stroke surviour/have a disability, can I still take part?

Yes! We want everyone to be able to participate in Stride for Stroke. Part of the reason we have created this fundraising challenge is that it is an activity accessible to many.

We ensured the challenge was flexible to the needs of individuals, whether you walk it, use your wheelchair, or perhaps even use fitness machines to track. You don’t have to participate within a set timeframe either, please take as long as you need to complete it.

I'm in a wheelchair, can I still take part?

Absolutely. There are several ways to ensure that wheelchair users can still take part and track their journey.

There are a couple of ways to record your steps:

  • Adding steps from an activity tracker:

Many of the wrist worn activity trackers, such as Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Watch, now allow wheelchair users to track their activity and convert to steps. If your activity tracker allows this, then please feel free to use that conversion!

  • Track the distance wheeled and convert to steps:

An odometer, which can be purchased from a cycle or sports equipment store can be attached to the wheelchair and will monitor the distance covered each day. The distance can then be converted to steps by using the following equation: 1km = 1312 steps*.

You can take on this challenge at any point in the year and a time that suits you.

Do I have to split up the 1.3million steps into 10,000 a day? Can I do less or more?

No, it doesn’t have to be 10,000 steps a day. You may want to challenge yourself to do 20,000 steps a day and complete it in half the time! Or you may want to do less a day and take on the challenge over a longer time frame.

The important part is it’s 1.3 million steps, at whatever pace you works for you.

How do I keep track of my steps?

We recommend that you use an app to help you track your distance, such as MapMyWalk, Walkmeter GPS, Outdoors Great Britain. You can also link this to your Stroke Association Fundraising page.
