I'm taking part in the London Marathon as part of #TeamStroke
As many of you know, my father passed away in March 2023, seven years after suffering from a stroke. It's an event that changed his life and something that he never recovered from. Despite an underlying steely resilience, the pain and impact was often too much for him, significantly altering his quality of life from being a fit an active father to someone who was largely bed bound and requiring 24hr care.
The Stroke Association do amazing work, work that supports people to rebuild their lives after stroke, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.
Amazingly, there are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.
The funds that I raise for my London Marathon run will go some small way to helping other families navigate through the impact that a stroke can have and, in time, seek a better understanding into stroke prevention.
Training hasn't gone too smoothly - I have kept the physios in business - but I hope to get around the 26.2 miles in April and raise money for a great cause.
