TCS London Marathon 2024

I'm running in the London Marathon 2024 for the Stroke Association!

I would be DELIGHTED if you would support my run in the London Marathon 2024.

I know how devastating stroke is for families, my own included. My mother, grandmother and father all faced this serious life-threatening condition. Each stroke caused us all heartbreak. That's why I am training hard to run my first ever marathon in order to raise money for the Stroke Association.

Funding is needed to provide vital services to help people impacted by stroke, and to fund scientific research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

The money donated thus far by supporters is massively motivating for me as I plod around the roads. Your generosity will make a tremendous difference to those impacted by stroke now and in the future.

I'll be jumping for joy when you donate! In advance, a heartfelt "THANK YOU".

My updates

26.2 miles achieved and fundraising target smashed!

Wednesday 24th Apr
The last update. One year on. I was hugely fortunate on Marathon Day as everything worked out perfectly. The run was hard going in places, with painful knees, hips and a new ache in the back - but what a mind-blowing experience from start to finish! Utterly wonderful in every way.

Thank you to everyone who supported me and the Stroke Association.

Thank you Bristol shoppers!

Friday 12th Apr
Today was fab as I had the pleasure of meeting Bristol's shoppers and spoke with them about the work of the Stroke Association. I also heard their stories of stroke and learnt so much myself.

Thanks to all who generously supported my fundraising - the money will be put to great use by the Stroke Association.

Special thanks to Richard and his colleagues for being nothing but supportive and thoughtful.

Savouring my tapering

Sunday 31st Mar
"Tapering" in marathon training refers to the gradual reduction of training intensity and volume leading up to the race, allowing the body to rest and recover while maintaining fitness for peak performance on race day.

'Gradual reduction' ... more like 'Thelma, Louise... and Jo fly off a cliff!' I'm actually tapering back up as I cut all movement immediately after achieving my longest distance of 21 miles and need to get back on the tarmac.

That's why, over the Easter holiday, I have run 15 miles and 8.8 miles. Rest day tomorrow and then I'll go out again...

Oh what a perfect day...

Sunday 17th Mar
Yes indeed, I am delighted to share the news that I ran my first ever 20+ miles... 21 miles! It was wonderful weather as I ran three loops of the local lanes.

I tested the kit I plan to wear in five weeks time. Only item I will change: socks. Feeling content and pretty impressed by my efforts; I can't quite believe it. 11 months of training in all weathers and today I managed 21 miles - WOW!

Champagne and stretching is the way to go - really challenges the balance aptitude.

The Stroke Association will put the money raised by my run, to brilliant use.

5 weeks to go!

Friday 15th Mar
It's the end of busy week. Thanks to the evenings drawing out, I ran for seven miles and managed to miss the many, many local showers - though did photograph some lovely rainbows.

I cannot imagine what it will be like during the London Marathon, which is so near, though am assured that it is an amazing experience. Due to the 11 months of training I've done, and with a bit more to go, I feel that I'm in good shape. We'll soon find out!

Arrived: Official Running Vest!

Saturday 2nd Mar
It's a thrill to have my official vest, the one that I shall wear in just a few weeks time. I wore it today for a six mile run and shall do so tomorrow, when I hope to run significantly further.

I received another donation today. It gives me such a boost when a supporter joins the team. Thank you to all of you who have generously supported my fundraising thus far!

10 weeks to go

Sunday 11th Feb
Wowza! How ever did this happen? 10 weeks until the London Marathon. I’ve been training for almost 10 months and now the big day is so near. Incredible. Yesterday I ran 17.31 miles. Had a bad headache around 14 miles and afterwards; think I may need to eat salty food as I run… it’s a never ending learning journey!

Perseverance Percy takes to the tarmac

Sunday 14th Jan
Perishing weather this weekend. This photo paints the picture nicely. Me plodding along for miles at a time by myself. I'm deeply appreciative of the donations that have been made so far. It means that my 50% fundraising target has been met and the Stroke Association will make meaningful things happen with £1,075! What a huge amount of money. £925 to go!

Celebrating my first 18 mile run - piles of miles!

Tuesday 2nd Jan
Each new distance deserves a celebration and so I'm enjoying my success on day one of the new year! I was fuelled by Champagne, cheese and biscuits, and cake; don't see those items anywhere on the marathon training 'top tips' blogs. I'm really pleased to have achieved this distance, it feels just great.

It poured with rain and I discovered that my running jacket wasn't waterproof and that January 1st was very, very cold - unsurprisingly. I was soaked to the bone but kept on going. Thinking about the reason I was running was a huge motivator as was the knowledge that friends and family had already given so generously to the cause.

What an adventure - something that I will only do once.

Eye of the tiger

Thursday 28th Dec
I managed to get utterly drenched as I ran around Bristol. Channelling my inner Sly Stallone, I Rocky-ed my way across the muddy Downs - singing the motivational chorus over and over and over…

Last Christmas I gave you my heart...

Saturday 23rd Dec
A six mile run completed and Christmas awaits!

Bristol t'raining - 16.3 miles

Monday 18th Dec
I ran in the mizzle and drizzle around Clifton and then moved to the Downs for five laps. When I mapped my route I discovered that I achieved my longest distance and my longest time EVER! A celebratory pizza and wine followed - I've read that diet is a key factor in athletic success.

Baby it's cold outside

Wednesday 13th Dec
December's weather is certainly challenging my training, but when the sky turns blue and the afternoon sun lights up the marcescent leaves... it's incredible.

14.72 miles achieved for the first time ever!

Sunday 10th Dec
Today, I figured that I would set a time target rather than a distance target. So, three hours was the goal and it was achieved - though I was too wiped out to stand upright for my promotional selfie!

14.5 miles splashing in autumnal floods

Sunday 12th Nov
It was a hard slog today. The rain caused floods in the fields and on the lanes. Alas, my right knee went berserk and so I had to limp around half of the 14.5 mile route. 14.5 miles!!! YAY!!!

4 months of marathon training already!

Friday 29th Sep
My seven mile run ended at the community hospital today - where my father was cared for, after his stroke. It is an exceptional place and I have been a trustee of its League of Friends for seven years, so far. I choose to volunteer my time as an expression of gratitude for all the hospital staff did for Daddy. I'm now running a marathon to raise money for the Stroke Association, in his memory.

There's a lot of us about

Sunday 24th Sep
I was running gingerly around the lanes (first time training in a fortnight due to latest injury) when I met a fellow #StrokeAssociation runner. What a lovely surprise! My leg held up, so my 10k run was a success.

13.5 miles today - it's all a blur!

Sunday 20th Aug
I'm certainly aching, but I'm also amazed that I managed to run a half marathon this afternoon. Clearly, I was inspired by the Lionesses who won a silver medal at the World Cup this morning. Well done one and all!

Inverted star jump, d'oh!

Monday 7th Aug
Let's hope that I don't get the arms all wrong for my BIG finish line photo.
Thanks to expert advice from Alexandra, I've started exercising in between my running sessions (which should reduce the ridiculous number of aches and pains I've already triggered) - full on athlete!

Coronation weekend

Sunday 7th May
Having run what I thought was an extra mile - it certainly felt like it - I mapped my run and discovered that it was only an extra 1/5th of a mile... 26.2 miles seems a very long way off, that's for sure ;-)

What a difference a day makes

Thursday 27th Apr
Embracing the hi-viz as I trotted around the country lanes after work (with hat merch) in the rain.

Ringo Starr or Paula Radcliffe?

Tuesday 25th Apr
My second training run as an athlete was fuelled by chocolate digestives. It's all going wonderfully well so far. Thank you Razzle Dazzle for your donation to the cause!

Day 1 of being an athlete

Sunday 23rd Apr
Today, I registered to run for the Stroke Association in next year's London Marathon. It will be a huge challenge as I have never run more than 13 miles - and that was a decade ago! Please help me to raise ££ towards stroke research and stroke support groups.
