Why am I running the GNR?

Saturday 17th Feb

Running the GNR is something I've wanted to tick off my bucket list for a few years now, but covid, ankle injuries and being scared of failing have put me off.
I entered, withdrew and re-entered the ballot this year, and when I found out on February 16th I'd not got a ballot place I was a bit gutted.
February 16th also marked 10 years since I lost my Grandad. He was a well known character and bit of a local legend!
He drove buses pretty much all his life, he took generations of kids to school, a lot of you reading this now were probably a passenger of his at some point in your life.

However February 16th wasn't the first time we lost him, just over 5 years earlier he suffered a massive stroke which left him unable to talk, walk, and he lost total use of his left side. In the blink of an eye my gregarious, larger than life hero, was practically mute and confined to his bed or wheelchair. On a really good day you'd see a glimmer of his personality shine through, there'd be an eye roll, a sideways look or a little chuckle, but those moments were few and far between.
His stroke not only changed his life, it changed my whole families lives.

So on September 8th, 10 days before what would have been his 94th birthday, I will be lacing up my trainers to run in his memory, and raise money for the stroke association.

Every 5 minutes stroke destroys lives, and every penny raised will help fund stroke support services and researching better treatments, care and rehabilitation, please give whatever you can 💜

Thank you to my sponsors
