I joined #TeamStroke for the Great North Run 2026.

There are over 1.4 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

No survivor should have to face life after stroke without stroke support, providing consistent, tailored help on the long journey to recovery. 

We work with the stroke community to ensure the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

My story

My name is Jamie and this year I’m taking on the Great North Run in support of the Stroke Association. Please note, I last did this 15 years ago… my knees are a little bit worse for wear these days! 

I have chosen to support Stroke Association for deeply personal reasons. 
On the day of his 80th birthday celebration—my late grandad, David, suffered a stroke - seeing the pillar of the family and a man I looked up to go through such a difficult time was heartbreaking. 

More recently, stroke has affected my life again in a way I never could have imagined. During my wife’s pregnancy, our newborn son experienced a perinatal stroke, meaning he suffered a brain injury before he was even born. As parents, it was an incredibly frightening and uncertain time—filled with questions, worry and a deep sense of helplessness. It brought us face to face with just how devastating and unpredictable strokes can be, affecting anyone at any stage of life—even the very beginning! 

There are still many unknowns for our little boy, but we are determined to give him the very best possible start—doing everything we can to support him in reaching and exceeding milestones the doctors have said he may struggle to achieve.

Taking on the Great North Run is more than just a physical challenge for me. It’s a deeply personal journey & an encouragement to help me get fit again. 
I’m running in memory of my grandad, in support of my son, and to help raise awareness of a condition that affects so many families, often without warning. It’s my way of turning something painful into something positive and of helping others who may be going through similar experiences.

The Stroke Association does incredible work—funding vital research, supporting recovery, and providing guidance, reassurance, and practical help to those affected and their families during some of the hardest times in their lives. Their work offers hope, answers, and support when it’s needed most.
Your support will help fund life-changing services, advance research and ensure that families like mine don’t have to face stroke alone.
