I'm taking part in the TCS London Marathon as part of #TeamStroke
I joined #TeamStroke for the TCS London Marathon 2024 because of my beautiful cousin Elizabeth, who from a young age was my partner in pretty much everything.
At the age of 13, one morning Elizabeth had developed an intense headache… so severe she thought she was dying. As a result of this she was rushed into hospital. Doctors suspected a teenage migraine. Due to her young age, it was misdiagnosed and turned out to be a blood clot on the brain requiring immediate surgery. The impact of the stroke changed her and her life forever.
Strokes in people under the age of 18 are uncommon, affecting five out of every 100,000 children a year in the UK. Elizabeth was until then a fit and healthy teenager and there was no apparent cause of why this happened to her.
Elizabeth now 23 and very determined, has been through many low points and challenges over the last 10 years both physically and mentally. Her personality is unrecognisable from the person she was, she has very limited use of her left arm and a limp in her leg. Elizabeth has gone above and beyond inspiring and proving to everyone that she can do what she was told she couldn’t do. She now leads a normal life, working, driving, ties her hair one handed and paints her nails with her mouth. She won the Stroke Association U18's Courage award, and it couldn’t be more deserving.
The stroke association gave Elizabeth the determination and support to achieve and adapt to the new her. The stroke association funds research, supports families and survivors, offers bereavement services and continues to spread the awareness of strokes. This charity has a huge place in my family’s heart and the reason I want to support them so they can continue with their amazing work.
