I'm taking part in the TCS London Marathon!
I haven’t taken this decision lightly as I have been really looking forward to also running the Manchester Marathon, for Cancer Research. When I originally signed up for Manchester, running it for the Stroke Association unfortunately wasn’t an option, which is why I chose to support Cancer Research, another charity close to my heart. With both events only being a week apart from each other, I wouldn’t be able to give my all to both. All donations that have already been raised for Cancer Research will still be donated to them, and I’ll now be starting my fundraising from scratch for the Stroke Association. My original reason for applying for the London Marathon was for my grandad and the opportunity to run this for him is something I simply can’t turn down.
He is the kindest, most selfless person I have ever met, and I feel incredibly lucky and proud to be his granddaughter. From when I was just 3 months old, he looked after me and my sister four days a week for 16 years. After everything he has done for us, being able to give back in any way small way is an honour.
In 2022, he sadly suffered from a stroke. Without the help he received after I don’t think he would be the person he is again today. It took his ability to speak, his movement and overall his independence. Thanks to the amazing help he received, he was provided speech therapy, physiotherapy and an occupational therapist. He also had around the clock care. Just a few months later, he was speaking again and was slowly able to get back to doing everyday tasks such as making a brew himself. Now, 4 years later, he requires very little assistance to do anything and this is all down to the amazing care he received after.
I will forever be grateful for the support and care my grandad received. Running the London Marathon is my way of giving back and helping the charity continue supporting stroke survivors and their families.
