I'm taking part in the Hertfordshire Half Marathon on 01/11/26.
To raise awareness and funds for the Stroke Association.
Why?
On the 23rd March 2026 our family found out what this devastating disease is capable of.
My Dad, Kev was taken ill at work after he suddenly collapsed.
He was rushed to hospital and after several hours we learned that Dad had suffered a blood clot to his brain stem which had brought on a monumental ischemic stroke.
The exact stroke was a basilar artery stroke and the outlook was bleak to say the least.
Dad was then transferred to another hospital for emergency surgery where the main clot was successfully removed. However, several smaller clots could not be safely removed.
Had the first hospital had the specialists / equipment in place to remove this clot then the outlook may not have been as bad, as with most medical situations, time is key.
Dad then spent just over 3 weeks in intensive care, bit by bit he became less reliant on the machines that were originally keeping him alive. He’s fought off sepsis and other infections too.
Dad was then moved from intensive care and onto a ward who can manage his tracheostomy, while he awaits a bed at a specialist rehabilitation centre.
As I write this we are approaching 9 weeks in hospital, the progress Dad has made has been phenomenal, as at one point it really was minute by minute.
Now there is hope.
I’d like to see, one day, every A&E hospital have a level of understanding and capabilities in how to treat such a disease at source, as mentioned time is everything.
Thank you for reading, if you can, please donate - whatever the amount to this cause - truthfully this charity isn’t something that’s ever crossed my mind, and that’s the point - this disease can strike ANYONE at ANY TIME, and sometimes without ANY WARNING.
