I'm taking part in the Great North Run as part of #TeamStroke

I joined #TeamStroke for the Great North Run.

There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

We're here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

My updates

My story

Sunday 21st Jul
I’m running for the Stroke Association in memory of my Dad, Fred Frechette.
In January 2022 our lives were turned upside down when my dad had a stroke. My mum had returned home from visiting my grandad and found my dad in the lounge having had his first stroke. The paramedics arrived quickly and got him to Calderdale Royal where he was given an MRI and treatment. As it was the tail end of covid we were unable to visit him so our updates were from the amazing staff on the ward and a video call that we had to book in. Everything initially seemed positive. He was on new medication and he was starting physio and his speech was improving. We had calls with the home care team to assess what adjustments may be needed at their home to meet my dad’s needs.
Monday 17th January everything changed. We had spoken to the ward in the morning and he’d had a good night. We found on the hospital website that we could send him a message from us that would be printed and taken to him. We had been unable to book another video call with him so we hadn’t physically seen him since the Friday. That was difficult as the reality was we would have been by his side everyday. I had left my mum at just after 2 and had not long been home when my mum rang me in floods of tears saying the specialist had rung to say my dad had suffered another massive stroke and that we needed to get to the hospital. The next hour was blur of calls to my brother and from the specialist as we made our way to the hospital . We were met at reception by the ward nurse who gave us a Covid test before we could go up. She was lovely, telling us that my dad had been sat up and telling her about us all and how he had three beautiful grandchildren. When she finished with “it’s so, so sad” I knew it wasn’t good.
We were taken to my dad and he looked like he was asleep- my mum held his hand and he squeezed it gently. I’d like to think that he knew we were there. We were asked to go in to a little side room and the specialist gave us the earth shattering news that my dad had suffered a catastrophic stroke that led to a huge bleed on his brain. The scans are something I will never forget. We were told that if my dad survived the next 24hrs he would be left severely brain damaged. When we had first arrived my brother and I had taken turns to be with my mum by my dad’s side but it wasn’t long before the specialist said we all needed to be there. We were all there by his side as he took his last breath.
Our lives were changed forever by a stoke. The Stroke Association website was vital throughout as it provided us with valuable information and support. We realised that my dad hadn’t been open with us regarding his health and that out of the 4 main risk factors, my dad had 3 of them.  My mum’s quick reaction when she found him was also due to the FAST campaign.
Although our story didn’t have a happy ending we want to use our experience to help others by supporting the Stroke Association and the wonderful work they do raising awareness and supporting those affected by stroke.
