I'm running the GNR this year with the Stroke Association for Alan and the Moore family.
In October 2023, my boyfriend's dad, Alan, suffered a spontaneous brainstem (pontine) haemorrhage. This is a stroke which holds a mortality rate ranging between 30-90%.
The brainstem has a role in cardiovascular system control, respiratory system control and consciousness.
Following some time in ICU, requiring intubation and ventilation, Alan miraculously survived.
After spending 5 weeks in hospital, he spent a further 3 months in a neurological rehabilitation centre which was funded by charities like the Stroke Association.
Since returning home, Alan has continued to progress and is looking to return to work soon.
The Stroke Association supports people to rebuild their lives after stroke and rely on donations to provide vital services, like the ones Alan benefited from, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.
