I'm running the London Marathon...

When my Dad suffered a stroke during a family holiday in April 2023, we didn’t actually know he’d had a stroke straight away. The room was spinning, he had to lie down and had a very painful headache. But no muscular weakness or slurred speech. Perhaps he was dehydrated after a long day outdoors?

Turned out he’d lost a third of his cerebellum in ten minutes.

After a series of scans in A&E, it was surprising and terrifying to be told he’d had a stroke. It turned our lives upside down, and it led to him finally retiring after 40 years in dentistry.

Fantastically, he’s made a rapid and impressive recovery since. He’s even returned to winding me up and telling us irritating jokes. All the time.

But not everyone’s as lucky as my Dad. Stroke occurs every 5 minutes in the UK and affects a whole range of demographics. It’s scary, it’s instant, and it’s horrible. I’ve chosen to run for the Stroke Association to help the amazing work they do so fewer people suffer at the hands of stroke.

As the kid who used to do anything in his power to avoid school sports day, I can’t quite believe I’m running the marathon…
