I'm taking part in the Great North Run 2026 as part of #TeamStroke
In 2024, my dad suffered a stroke that took away his ability to speak. We were told he might not survive, and that if he did, he would never walk or talk again. Hearing that about someone who had always been one of the brightest, wittiest, most talkative people I know was devastating. To lose the simple, human gift of communication is something no one should have to experience.
But my dad refused to give up. With the support of the Stroke Association and an incredible amount of strength and determination, he has relearned how to walk, and even how to play the piano again. Watching him fight for every small victory has been both heartbreaking and inspiring.
This September, I will be running the Great North Run, despite never having run more than 5k before (!!!). I’m doing it to show my dad that his courage, resilience, and relentless hard work do not go unnoticed. He inspires me every single day, and now, it’s my turn to work hard, for my dad.
