Oliver’s Story

Oliver’s Story told by his mum.

In the early hours of the 19th February 2024, Oliver woke up showing obvious stroke symptoms with a drooped face, left side weakness and loss of control of his bladder. He woke me up with a mixture of him laughing and crying in an attempt to talk to me. As a mother and with him being only 8 years old it was the most frightening experience of my life but I had to stay strong and act quick to save my boy. Oliver was initially taken to Bolton hospital where he was diagnosed with a blocked artery in his neck which had resulted in a stroke and he was rushed to Salford hospital for urgent surgery to remove the blood clot. We had the best team of neurologists and surgeons who thankfully saved his life and he was transferred later to Manchester children’s hospital to receive therapy and recover the best he could. We found out that the stroke was caused by a dissected artery in Oliver’s neck caused by an unknown injury. One of the most rarest strokes to ever happen to a child and I was told it’s only usually seen in children when they’ve been in serious accidents such as a car accident. Oliver has ASD, Tourette’s and Hyper-mobility and at this stage it is thought that Oliver may have moved his neck too quickly and too far or landed on it funny when playing or swimming due to his hyper-mobility. We might never know the cause of his dissected artery. Oliver has recovered well although his artery is still currently dissected but he is on treatment to prevent this happening again. He also still has some left side weakness and fatigue. The care Oliver was provided with by Salford and Manchester was outstanding and no words could describe how thankful I am for that and we hope due to their continued care that he can and will recover fully in the near future.’

Please donate to help research in rare cases like Oliver’s. Thank you!

Amy’s Story

This May, we are running the Great Manchester run to raise money for the Stroke Association.

In January Amys dad suffered 2 strokes resulting in him losing the ability to walk, move his left arm, and affecting his speech & cognition. Thankfully, with the help of the team at Bolton Hospital, his recovery is ongoing but getting better & stronger each day.

This is a charity that is close to both of our hearts and we really appreciate any donations, thank you.

We are taking part in the Great Manchester Run 2024 as part of #TeamStroke

We have joined #TeamStroke for the Great Manchester Run 2024.

There are over 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

We're here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.
