I'm taking part in the BMW Berlin Marathon 2025 as part of #TeamStroke
I joined #TeamStroke for the BMW Berlin Marathon 2025.
This September I will be running Berlin Marathon in aid of stroke association.
I signed up back at the beginning of October. Dad knew I was hoping to get a charity spot in Berlin, one of our favourite cities, but I hadn’t told him I was hoping to run it for him.
Dad had a ‘significant stroke’ in 2019. It happened on a Sunday, and despite having been unable to raise his arm at all at the start of the week, he was back in the pub on Friday evening. He was at my football game 10am the Saturday morning (even if he didn’t run the line that week!!) and then managed 9 holes of golf the next Monday.
He went on to make an almost full recovery which I believe is due how determined and strong minded he was.
The determination Graeme showed during that week and throughout his recovery was something that has really stuck with me. He would always look for solutions rather than focusing on the problems, no matter how hard that might have been.
Despite not being a runner (at all!)) Graeme ran London marathon in 2011 in memory of his Dad. Last year I ran London marathon in memory of my Granddad. This year I’m running in memory and celebration of my Dad, Graeme, whom I miss so dearly.
There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.
We're here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.
