I'm taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2026 as part of #TeamStroke
On 26th August 2024 our lives changed dramatically when Julie suffered a stroke, resulting in her losing the use of the left-side of her body Over the last 18 months she has worked relentlessly with physios and occupational therapists and, from literally not being able to sit up in bed, she is now able to walk a mile and has limited movement in her arm and hand. Further improvement is expected but it's an extremely slow process as the brain gradually builds new neural pathways to by-pass the areas of the brain that were damaged by the stroke. As you can imagine this is not the retirement either of us had envisaged.
Support from family and friends has been key and has helped us get through the darkest time of our lives. Our thanks go out to those of you who have consistently supported us through these times via messaging and helping us out - you know who you are.
We have received support from a number of institutions, many of which have been funded by the Stroke Association. I have therefore decided to run the Edinburgh marathon to raise money to support the work they do. This will only be the second time I will have run this distance -I ran the London marathon in 2011 and told Julie to never let me run a marathon again, but here I am 15 years older and doing it again - despite Julie's protestations. We will make the most of our time in the area by staying up there for a few days and spending time with our youngest son Ben who lives in Edinburgh
Before Julie's stroke we didn't really understand what a stroke was and the devastating effect it can have on people's lives. It is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. There are over 1.4 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.
The Stroke Association helps support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. They believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so they work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. They rely on the public's support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.
