I'm taking part in the Great North Run 2026 as part of #TeamStroke

My amazing running partner, pacer and husband suffered two strokes in July 2023. I miss him on every long run but count our blessings that we can still we do our much slower 1 mile run.  His quiet determination, acceptance and positive outlook on life despite the challenges he faces every day are my inspiration for signing up for the GNR. We lived near the starting line for many years and in 1998 I supported Barry in his first GNR. This year me and Niamh (our daughter) will be doing it for him!

The Stroke Association provided us with so much support and information during our darkest days. We know we are the lucky ones and that’s why Niamh and I have joined #TeamStroke for the Great North Run 2026.

There are over 1.4 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

No survivor should have to face life after stroke without stroke support, providing consistent, tailored help on the long journey to recovery.

We work with the stroke community to ensure the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.
