I'm taking part in the Great North Run 2025 as part of #TeamStroke

I joined #TeamStroke for the Great North Run 2025.

There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

We're here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

I suffered from a stroke in 2018 not long after I lost my grandma to a stroke. My grandad also suffered from a stroke so this is something that is very close to my heart.

My experience

Sunday 19th Jan

I suffered a stress induced stroke in September 2018 when I was 23 Years old. I was in a really bad place in my life at this point, I was in an abusive relationship and grieving for my grandma who hadn’t long passed away from having a stroke.

The whole of my left side was temporarily paralysed and I also lost my speech temporarily. It was the scariest feeling and wouldn’t wish it on anyone. While being in hospital they done some tests and scans and found a hole in my heart. I have had the surgery to fix it, I still get a bit of numbness to my left hand and I get pains in my left leg but apart from that I have been fine. My Grandad Danny who is no longer here was a stroke survivor and my grandad Tom also died from a stroke.

This is why I’m running for the Stroke Association, not just for my experience but for my grandparents.
