I'm back - and this time with my daughter!

I joined #TeamStroke for the Great North Run 2026, forty-one years after my first and only GNR in 1985 at the tender age of 14!

My daughter, a student at Newcastle University hoping to go into medical research, volunteered herself and asked me to run the 2026 edition with her. I'm a keen runner but Sophia is a rower and needs all the support through training to help her get into the right shape to cover more than 2km without them help of 8 other girls!

We've supported The Stroke Association many times. My father and Sophia's grandfather, died in 2008 from complications arising from a Stroke. Ironically the disease was the basis of my dissertation years earlier when I was a student. A lot has been done since then but we need to go on.

There are over 1.4 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

No survivor should have to face life after stroke without stroke support, providing consistent, tailored help on the long journey to recovery. 

The Stroke Association works with the stroke community to ensure the very best care and support. They rely on our support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

There are so many worthwhile causes requiring suppor; me and Sophia would really love it if you made The Stroke Association one of them and help us reach our modest fundraising goal.
