I joined #TeamStroke for the Great North Run 2026.

There are over 1.4 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.

No survivor should have to face life after stroke without stroke support, providing consistent, tailored help on the long journey to recovery. 

We work with the stroke community to ensure the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

Hi everyone so this is a bit of a hard one to write but here we go!
2 years ago my grandad was diagnosed with cancer. This was as you can imagine a hard hit for the family but we all stuck together. Following on from this diagnosis, my grandad also had a stroke. He lost his speech, ability to read and to write. Through hard work and determination, he improved his speech significantly, and eventually got back to what he loved doing most. Reading! A hobby we both bonded over in the last years of his life.
 
On the 29th April 2026 we sadly lost my grandad to his battle with cancer which as you can imagine was a major blow to us all. 

I am running the GNR this year for the stroke association, because I’ve seen first hand the impact a stroke can have on individuals and their families! Please consider donating to such a great cause if you can because their work helps thousands of families in similar positions to my own!
Rest in peace Grandad. I’ll be thinking of you on the start line
