Why Stroke Association?

Monday 21st Sep

In early 2026, my Grandad suffered from a stroke for the second time. Like so many families who unfortunately find themselves in similar circumstances, the severity of the stroke and time scale for a potential recovery were completely unknown at first. The impact was felt by all who knew him, highlighted by the fact he didn’t get a moments peace as a result of the constant visitations throughout his time in hospital.

My grandad however is the most courageous person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and my biggest inspiration in so many ways. We knew he would never give up. Thanks to the incredible support and care he received, both in hospital and after returning home, my Grandad is back doing what he loves, playing guitar, going for walks, cleaning his already spotless car and most importantly spending time with family.

It has been an incredibly difficult year, but we are the fortunate ones. The ones who still get to speak to, spend time with and embrace our Grandad, Dad, Husband and friend to so many. For many family’s there is a very different outcome. Which is why I am running the Great North Run for Stroke Association. Ensuring every stroke survivor has the support and care in place to help on the road to recovery. This is absolutely imperative, and if my run can support this cause in any way possible, I would be truly honoured.
