TCS London Marathon 2025

A little back story on why I am running the London Marathon for #TeamStroke

As some of you reading this may know, I had a strong bond with my Grandma. My Grandma sadly died in 2017 and towards the end of her life I, alongside her existing carers and my mum, helped care for her.

This is an insight in to my Grandmas life and the resilience she showed with challenges she faced throughout.

My Grandma, Eileen, was born in 1927 in Preston, Lancashire.

At the age of 3, she contracted measles and unfortunately left her deaf. As a result, her school life was incredibly challenging as she couldn't hear the teachers and her education suffered.

When my grandma was 13, she had a narrow escape from being killed by a German bomb. The bomb was dropped on the street her best friends house was that she was playing at, at the time. When the air raid sirens sounded, my grandmas brother came to her friends house collect her and they went home. Sadly, her best friend, Nellie, and her family (5 brothers and their mum and dad) were killed.

At the age of 14, my grandma left school and went to work in the local mill., she worked there until she married in 1952. She has two daughters, my mum Pam and my Auntie Carole. Then sadly, she was widowed at the age of 47 when my grandad, who was a train driver, suffered a heart attack whilst driving a train.

Grandma kept herself busy and she lived a very active life. She didn't drive, so walked miles daily, When me and my brother were born, grandma helped to look after us whilst my mum and dad were working.

On one Friday night in January 1995, grandma suffered a life changing stroke. As my grandma lived alone, she was only found on the Saturday morning. Due to the delay in finding her, by the time she had been taken to the hospital the damage had already been done.

Grandma had lost movement down her right side and had lost her speech. Over time her speech slowly came back and in the beginning she was able to walk a few steps with a walking stick. Unfortunately, at the time there was very little help in Grandmas postcode for physiotherapy. Eventually she was unable to walk at all.

Grandma lived with this devastating disability for 23 years. Even though she had carers 4 times a day, and only had use of her left arm and leg, she still did what she could.

My grandma died in November 2017 and I am running in her memory to help raise money for vital research and development and to provide care for people living with the terrible disease.
