I'm taking part in the Great North Run 2026 as part of #TeamStroke

Back in October 2025 my Grandma Kath was taken into Cramlington hospital, it is there where we were told that she’d had a stroke. She stayed in Cramlington for a week, by her bedside daily it was difficult to comprehend what was happening.

She was moved to Wansbeck Hospital where she remained for around three months. During her time at Wansbeck on the stroke ward, ward nine, I watched people filter through the five beds that surrounded hers.

It was there, where I sat for hours upon hours after work, on weekends, and on one occasion through the night, that I realised how precious life is. I watched as family’s lives changed forever, including mine, in the blink of an eye - I watched the ripple effect of what a stroke can do.

I met some phenomenal people, family members staying strong only to crumble when out of eye sight.

During this time it would have been incredibly easy for me to pick up old habits, my whole world was shattered. I knew at that point I’d never have my Grandma back to how she was before, my best friend.

So I ran. I ran hard.

I signed up to the Great North Run for Stroke Association because i knew it would keep me motivated. Running has became my free therapy and I would be lost without it.

My Grandma is a fighter, from end of life care to walking around the care home as if she owns the place. To think we’d never in our wildest imagination believe she’d ever walk again. She celebrated her 90th Birthday in January.

When I cross that finish line, it isn’t just for my Grandma, it’s also for all the wonderful individuals that I met on Ward 9.

My updates

First half complete ✅

Sunday 29th Mar
I very rarely say it but I’m proud of myself for pushing through and getting a solid time on my first ever attempt. It’s now time to keep building. Onwards and upwards 👌🏼

251 miles

Friday 27th Mar
251 miles now ran since I began my training. A huge milestone in my eyes. From short runs, long runs, intervals, the sweat and tears along the way, it’s all starting to pay off.

Sub 30 5k

Tuesday 24th Feb
Over the moon with this one tonight. I didn’t only achieve the sub 30, which I’ve been striving for since starting out in November, but also a PB in half mile, mile, 1k and 2 miles. Really feeling as if the hard work is starting to pay off now 👌🏼

2nd best PB 10k

Friday 20th Feb
Lush run this morning with the doggo 🤙🏼

Finally 30 mins.

Sunday 25th Jan
Absolutely buzzing with this one - the wind was howling and at points couldn’t catch my breath but over the moon with this PB.

First ten miler last weekend - 16.11km🏃

Sunday 25th Jan
This was a tough one but a great way to finish the week.

Scraping a PB in tonight’s run wasn’t on my bingo card

Thursday 15th Jan
Very sleepy evening run, buzzing I managed to get a 5k PB 🤙🏼

Running 10k and getting a PB in a blizzard 🥶

Saturday 3rd Jan
With stiff and sore legs today I was reluctant to leave the house, especially with a good couple of inches of snow outside. I braved it, set myself up for a steady 5k but ended up running 10 in a blizzard with the temperature below freezing. I’m really pleased with the results I’m seeing as I come to the end of week four of my running journey so far. Couldn’t quite believe how I managed to beat my previous record but overall absolutely buzzing with it 🏃

Start as you mean to go on.

Thursday 1st Jan
Happy new year! Smashed this one out the park this morning (if I say so myself) I wasn’t planning on it with very sore knees and ankles but kept pushing and managed to run 10K. During January i just need to keep the momentum going.

58.07 miles

Wednesday 31st Dec
58.07 miles ran in total throughout December. Roll on January.

Beau’s birthday run 🏃 🐶

Sunday 14th Dec
4.39 miles completed in 52 mins 🤙🏼
