In May last year, my Grandma suffered a stroke in which she was placed in hospitalised care for over a month. Not only did it have an effect on her, it had a negative impact on those around her, including myself, my family and her friends. She has since been recovering at home, however she is not the same cheeky, feisty Grandma I once knew. She has grown more frail in the past 8 months than I have ever seen, and is requiring round-the-clock care so selflessly given by my Grandad. Strokes really can just come on out of the blue, and they can impact anyone no matter the age or health status.
As a result of all of this, I will be running the GNR this year in an attempt to raise money for Stroke Association, who campaign for better stroke care, and rebuild people’s lives by helping to fund and provide preventative and rehabilitative treatments. After all she has done for me over the past 18 years, I feel it’s only right I give something back.
It sounds cliché but a donation of anything is so truly appreciated, it all goes towards a great, vital cause and helps me reach my goal.
There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.
