I'm taking part in the Great North Run 2026 as part of #TeamStroke
Saturday 31st JanJohn, my husband had a stroke in October. It was sudden, unpredictable and unfortunately John didn't recover and he died in hospital the very next day. He was only 66 and we'd been looking forward to many more happy years together going to gigs, discovering new places and new music too, as that was John's passion.
John had been supporting me since I took up running just under 3 years ago, when we moved to the North-East. A few days before his death he had mentioned that I should be giving the Great North Run a go... Empowered by his faith in me and to honour his memory, I had to rise to the challenge. I am running the GNR and raising funds for the Stroke Association — a charity that supports stroke survivors and funds vital research into causes, treatment and prevention.
Every year in the UK, there are around 100,000 strokes, causing 38,000 stroke-related deaths. Stroke is the fourth single leading cause of death in the UK and the single largest cause of complex disability.
