TCS London Marathon 2027

I'm taking part in the TCS London Marathon 2027 with #TeamStroke

In April I'll be running the London Marathon to raise £3,000 for the Stroke Association.

In 2019, my mum suffered two strokes just over a couple months apart.  Initially she was paralysed on her whole left side.  She had to relearn how to walk, speak, and use her arm and hand.  The second stroke further affected her leg and speech and reduced her cognitive skills.  Seven years on, she is still living with the effects of those strokes. She hasn't yet made the full recovery she deserves, but what amazes me most is that she never stops fighting. Every day she continues to exercise, strengthen herself, and push forward with determination and hope.

Watching her face these challenges has shown me what resilience looks like.  I'm running in honour of her courage, and to support the Stroke Association in funding vital research, rehabilitation, and support for stroke survivors and their families. With continued investment and research, more people can have the chance to make fuller recoveries and regain more of the lives they love.

Thank you for any support :)

Mum's Story

Tuesday 23rd Jun
“I have worked all my professional life in theatre and tv performance. First in a ballet company and then in musicals, acting and teaching. It was 13th July 2019, I cycled to work on Saturday morning at the end of term, taking the small children through their rehearsal for a later performance for their parents when I began to feel a little strange, as if someone had set off an incendiary device in my head. I had suffered a haemorrhagic stroke. My colleagues called an ambulance, and I was rushed to St.Georges Hospital. When I first came round, I realised I was paralysed on the whole of my left side. From being someone very active and totally in control I now found I couldn’t walk, sit up or lift my arm. To add insult to the injury, after knuckling down and fighting my way back to just about being able to walk again, I suffered a further stroke on September 21st just over 2 months later. This time my leg was more affected, my speech too was affected, and my cognitive skills were reduced. So now I had to learn to speak, walk and use my hand. But the thing I miss most is my ability to make others feel comfortable in my presence - I have lost the ability for small talk. I am unable to sew and be dexterous; something I previously loved to do. But after it all and seven years further on, I don’t miss a day when I’m not exercising to some degree. Pilates, ballet barre, or attending an online group writing session with ‘the Silver Lining’, I keep consistently trying to improve. I’m very proud of my son, Gabe, taking the time to echo my efforts, in raising awareness by running the London Marathon. With the help of my family, stroke organisations and other very understanding people around me. I will not give up!”
