I'm taking part in the TCS London Marathon as part of #TeamStroke
I joined #TeamStroke for the TCS London Marathon 2025.
In 2017 my Grandad suffered a huge stroke that at the time we were told that not many people survive. Despite this, he defeated the odds but it did turn his and our lives upside down. He lost his independence and had to give up the things he’d loved doing - a proud man who had taken care of horses and his family his whole life, dependent on them overnight. Not being able to use the left side of his body as effectively as before, walking completely unassisted, driving and even something so simply as tying up your own shoe became a thing of the past. A couple of years later he suffered another stroke, again defeating the odds and surviving… but this brought further complications. Now diagnosed with vascular dementia, cancer and confined to a sofa, I want to give back to the people that supported him and us at our lowest. There are over 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, with 100,000 strokes happening in the UK each year. That's one stroke every five minutes.
In 2024, my uncle also suffered a stroke at the age of 60. He lost the ability to play his guitar, to walk, to speak - all in the blink of an eye. Having to move into assisted living for the rest of his life due to the devastating affects of this stroke, his life will never be the same again.
This marathon is a challenge to push myself physically and to not take for granted my own health. I want to raise money for this great cause- one of which has helped so many people, and one of which will help so many even just in the hours it takes me to run it.
