Stroke Association is here to support people to rebuild their lives after stroke. We believe everyone deserves to live the best life they can after stroke, so we work with the stroke community to make sure people affected by stroke get the very best care and support. We rely on your support to provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and fund research into preventative and rehabilitative treatments.

Reason for Running

Sunday 14th Dec

I’m running the Manchester Marathon in April 2026 to raise funds for the Stroke Association. As my family and friends already know, I had a stroke in year 10 (aged 15), so I wanted to do something to raise money & awareness. I have always enjoyed running anyway.

Back in 2017, I was lucky and made a full recovery, but lost half my eyesight which of course wasn’t ideal. This took time to adjust as a kid in school, doing exams and playing sports. It did take away ever driving, but to be fair driving is expensive so that’s not too bad.

At the time, I never knew anything about strokes and had no idea even when it happened. I’d say the majority of kids never give it a thought.

It is something I’ve never talked about or mentioned because nobody likes someone milking an illness or injury. It’s also never needed to be discussed. But, I think now it’s a good time to raise money for a charity whilst doing something I’ve always wanted to do. A full marathon.

I do now think after looking back, there is a lack of awareness. Mainly this with young people. When I was a kid, I always thought strokes only really happened as you got a lot older in life. I hope by doing the marathon, the money raised will go to a great charity, but mainly raise awareness to the symptoms & effects a stroke can have on an individual & their family.

I also hope by doing a marathon, young people who unfortunately have a stroke, can see that a recovery is achievable. I also hope they can feel a little better & that it doesn’t define you at all.

Any donation will be greatly appreciated as it goes to a great charity. Cheers. Billy
