Why I’m Running the Great North Run for the Stroke Association
Friday 28th Mar10 years ago we lost Uncle Dave to a stroke. Stroke is more common than many people realise—one happens every five minutes in the UK affecting around 100,000 people every year. It can change lives in an instant not just for those who experience it but for their families too.
The Stroke Association funds life-changing research into stroke prevention treatment and rehabilitation helping more people survive and rebuild their lives. Since 2015—the year we lost Uncle Dave—stroke survival rates have improved by 30%. That progress is incredible but there’s still so much more to do. By supporting the Stroke Association we can help improve these statistics further and ensure more families get a better outcome in the future.
My connection to strokes doesn’t end there. Seven years ago I was rushed to hospital with a suspected stroke. It was terrifying being on a stroke ward seeing the impact it had on others and not knowing what was happening to me. Thankfully my case wasn’t a stroke but for so many others that moment is just the beginning of a long and difficult journey.
Why the Great North Run?
I never thought I’d run a half marathon but the Great North Run holds a special meaning for me. When I was younger I used to watch my dad train for these races and thought he was mad. I used to ask myself, why would anyone run 21km for fun? I was one of those kids who hated running at school (and I think my PE teachers hated me too!).
After finishing my second degree this time last year I wanted to do something meaningful with my time and running was my new challenge to myself. This time last year I struggled to run 5km but now I’m taking on 21km—not just for myself but in memory of Uncle Dave and to support those affected by stroke.
Every donation no matter how big or small will help fund vital research and support for stroke survivors. Together we can keep improving stroke survival rates and make a real difference. Thank you for your support!
