Two Capital Challenge #TeamStroke
In 2009, I suffered a stroke at the age of 42. The quick actions of my wife and the medical team saved my life, but I was left with having to relearn how to walk properly, as well as how to write and type.
At first, my goal was simply to walk to the toilet unaided. Then it became reaching the end of the drive, then the end of the road. Step by step, that progress turned into running—and in 2010, I set myself the goal of completing a marathon, which I achieved in 2011.
Crossing that finish line was overwhelming. I had tears in my eyes; it was such a significant achievement considering how far I had come, both physically and mentally.
Running gave me focus, purpose, and the determination to rebuild my life. It wasn’t just my physical health that improved - those long runs, and the conversations with my friend and running partner along the way, helped me navigate some very dark places.
In many ways, I now see my stroke as a turning point. It was a stark warning that led me to reassess and improve my lifestyle. Now in my 60th year, I am in a strong place both physically and mentally. I know that I am one of the lucky ones – a stroke survivor that has made a full recovery and for that I am very thankful.
I know that there are many inspiring and moving stories out there in our world right now, and so many different demands on your hard-earned income. The Stroke Association, like all charities who support people like me in our darkest hours know this too, they've seen a steady decline in the financial support that can be the difference between life and death.
In recognition of this, I'm going the extra mile - well, actually, an extra 26 miles - to help make my story stand out. This stroke survivor will also run the Edinburgh Marathon within a month of the London Marathon. If you think my Two Capital Challenge is worthy of your support, I encourage you to follow that urge. You never know what impact your help will have.
With my heartfelt thanks, Andrew.

Good luck with the training! Your support team will be with you every step of the way. X
