Why I chose Team Stroke

Friday 29th May

My Grandad had a stroke a few years before I was born. He lost most of his speech and movement on his right side, which made it difficult for him to get around and communicate and, being right-handed, even writing became a challenge. I sometimes wonder what it would have been like if he’d been able to spend that quality time with us - sharing knowledge, telling stories, teaching me how to play first five. I like to think those moments would have meant a lot.

My grandfather in Indonesia, my Buya, also suffered a stroke shortly before I moved to the UK. His symptoms were less severe, but at his age it was still a major setback. I managed to visit him in Indonesia on my way over, but the combination of his slurred speech and my terrible Indonesian made our conversations even more difficult.

Seeing the impact strokes have had on both sides of my family has shown me how important awareness, prevention, and early action really are. Even small lifestyle changes and recognising the warning signs early can make a life-changing difference, helping more people keep the moments, memories, and connections that matter most.
