In Loving Memory of My Dad 💜
Tuesday 4th NovLife can change in a heartbeat — something my family and I learned in the most devastating way.
On Friday 25th April 2014, I’d taken a break after a busy period at work. I was out fishing and having a picnic with my daughter Grace, who was 3 at the time, my son Harvey, just 8 months old and Meg. The fishing was slow but that did not dampen the day as I was enjoying being with family and being outside.
Dad called to see how I was getting on. When I told him the fishing wasn’t going too well, he laughed said it’s not quite fishing in France and invited us round for a takeaway, so he and Mum could spend time with us and their grandchildren. It turned into a perfect evening full of love.
The next day, I popped in again with the kids so dad could see his grandchildren again, he really could not get enough of seeing them and to pick up the car after getting a taxi home the night before. The kids went to bed early Saturday (for a change) and we enjoyed a relaxing evening, What had been shaping up to be a wholesome weekend changed in an instant.
Early on Sunday morning Mum called in panic. “Dad’s not well — get to Southend hospital as soon as you can… and call your sisters.”
Within moments, everything was different. Our world had turned upside down, and we spent the next agonising few days beside him, Despite the incredible efforts of the medical teams, Dad passed away on 30th April 2014, just days after suffering a stroke.
We weren’t fortunate enough to make more memories with Dad — and that will always stay with me. He’s missed so much over the years: the joy of seeing 2 more grandchildren George and Archie, family weddings, milestone birthdays, holidays and all the little everyday moments that make life special.
So I’m running the London Marathon in his memory, to raise funds for the Stroke Association.
The charity does incredible work supporting stroke survivors and their families, helping them rebuild their lives, make precious memories, and find hope after something so sudden and life-changing.
A stroke doesn’t just affect one person — it affects the whole family. The shock, the helplessness, the grief, and the way life changes overnight — it’s something no family can ever be prepared for.
If raising this money helps even one family have more time together, one more shared laugh, or one more more special memory then every mile will be worth it.
Please Donate if You Can
Every donation, big or small, will help the Stroke Association continue their vital work — funding life-saving research, supporting recovery, and helping families through the toughest times.
Let’s honour Dad’s memory by helping others keep making theirs.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart
